Bordeaux is one of the most splendid cities in France and I’m very lucky to call it home!
“Take Versailles, add Antwerp, and you have Bordeaux,” wrote Victor Hugo.
Enjoy the beauty of Bordeaux’s second golden age, the downtown 18th Century classical buildings that radiate harmony. Take in the must see monuments along the quayside (including the iconic Place de la Bourse and its water mirror), the wealthy mansions on the Triangle d’Or, the classical Grand Théâtre, the fountain and monument of the Girondins …
Walk with me to discover more, including stories from Roman times, through Bordeaux’s first golden age or English period and experience with me our present gilded age, our way of life and the secret treasures known to us locals.
Some examples follow:
-
The old city, le Vieux Bordeaux, just a few minutes from the iconic Place de la Bourse. Winding streets show their medieval origins, fascinating stories abound, there’s some older architecture, including the two remaining city gates, and modern street art, plus small independent shops rather than brands … it’s the heart of the city for me and where I have lived for over 30 years.
-
St Michel on the southern side of the city, it’s a melting pot and home to the famous Capucins market. We are obsessed with food, so come see one morning how we select and buy our favourite produce. It’s where I shop of course!
-
The Chartons neighbourhood to the north of the city. A different vibe, another style. Where the famous wine traders had their merchant houses, some still do and I traded wines here for several years. Stories from the second world war find their roots here and of course include those centered on wine.
-
The Bacalan district to the north of the City, this revitalized/reborn docks & ex-industrial area starts with our famous wine museum, la Cité du Vin, and contains the Submarine base but there is much to discover in this new residential, business & artisanal neighbourhood, including its 500 year old history.
The region is blessed with vine soaked countryside and many other sites : the lovely village of Saint-Emilion, with its two thousand year history, bastide towns and their markets, the nearby Dordogne region and the medieval town of Bergerac, and for fresh oysters and perfect seaside views, there’s the bay of Arcachon with its famous Dune.
We are lucky to have many high end hotels and smart boutique hideaways, plus a vast array of restaurants, including several starred establishments both old and recent.
